It has been wonderful to have Miss Miller with our Grade 1's. As noted in the newsletter, Miss Miller is completing her field experience through the University of Alberta. She has been teaching Science in Mrs. Ranta's room so gets the opportunity to teach all of the grade ones! This week she has started a "Tag Club" where the students in Grade 1 and 2 are invited to join in some tag games with her at lunch recess. British Bulldog was a HIT today! Here is a picture of some of the fun:

We asked the grade 1s to bring in 1-2 cans for our 100th day of school. We used those cans for measurement activities and will donate them to the foodbank. The grade 1 students BLEW US TEACHERS AWAY and brought in almost 140 cans! WOW! Thank you to everyone who helped us to make such a substantial donation of food.
We hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season. It is hard to believe that we are 4 months through Grade 1! We have a lot going on in the next few months. The January Newsletter will be coming home with this information for you.
Cold and flu season is in FULL swing in grade 1. If your child is not feeling well in the morning, please keep him/her home. We have had a number of students get sick at school. Keeping an ill child at home will help minimize the spread of germs.
Thanks! ~ Grade 1 team Don't forget that this Thursday is Portfolio Conferences. This is your child's opportunity to show you some learning that we do in our classes! You will also get to see and take home their portfolio. Inside each portfolio is a Progress Report so you can see how your child is doing in Grade One. Please keep in mind that outcomes are to be met by June so we will continue working on them throughout the school year.
Thank you to everyone who sent in their Portfolio Conference request sheet. We have noted your preferred times. The evening is quite flexible so you can show up whenever you’d like within that time slot. Your child does need to be in attendance. Please expect the process to take about 20 minutes. Tuesday, Nov. 22nd will be our very first Nitohtawin Gathering. Nitohtawin is a Cree word meaning "Please listen to me". This gathering gives all students a chance for their voice to be heard in regards to their learning. You should have received a parent letter last week explaining the day. If you didn't, here it is:
This week schools across Canada and the world are participating in Bully Awareness Week. The Bully Awareness website describes this week as "an opportunity for people at the grassroots level in communities around the world to get involved in this issue, not by waiting for "Someone else" to do something, but rather for us to work together on preventing bullying in our communities through education and awareness." There will be different activities for the students to do throughout the week.
Tuesday will be ORANGE Day. So kids are encouraged to wear orange, bring oranges in, etc. |
