I have added some pictures to the page from the Terry Fox Run. It was a very busy afternoon and I did not get a chance to take pictures of everyone. I tried to make a little slideshow so hopefully the pictures change. :)

Today Miss Longjohn's and Miss Larsen's classes went outside for DPA. Mrs. Rarick's class went out later in the day. Our focus was on catching and throwing so we worked cooperatively with frisbees and bean bags. We topped it off with a relay race. It was a blast!
Today we finished up and reviewed our last set of letter sounds. Your child should now be able to recognize and produce the sound for c, k, r, e, m and d. We did a sound sort and completed a sound quiz this afternoon. Under the Alphabet Songs tab are all of the songs that we do for the letters. See if your child can remember the song and actions too!
In Math we have been working VERY hard on patterns. The last few days have involved making AB, AAB and ABB patterns out of shapes, colours, size, sounds and movements. Encourage your child to make you a pattern at home. To challenge them ask them to show you the core of the pattern (the part that is repeating). We have also been learning numbers. This week our focus will be on number 4. In Science we have switched over to our unit "Seasonal Changes: Fall" this week. We started talking about what signs around us tell/show us the season has changed. Today we started an Art project where we will get to stamp fall leaves on to our painted trees. Keep an eye out for the trees during Parent Teacher Conferences next week! Don't forget that Picture Day is tomorrow (Tuesday). PES also does Spring pictures later this year.
I think I have tried 100 times to upload pictures to the blog and it seems to be very finicky. I think I have ironed out a few problems.

Please make sure to check back later for some more pictures! -Miss Larsen Don't forget that our Terry Fox Run is this Thursday afternoon. We participate rain or shine so please ensure that your child is dressed for the weather.
Mrs. Rarick has sent out little white forms that ask who your child is running for. Please fill out the firm and return it ASAP to the school. Oh and don't forget there are class prizes for the classes that raise the most amount of pledges! All classes headed down to the Technology Commons (computer lab) in Science today. Our goal was to introduce logging in to the computers independently. Each child is required to input their unique username (Wolf Creek email address) and password that contains letters, numerals and symbols. It is quite the daunting task at the beginning of the year but luckily kids pick it up quite quickly. This year we will do lots of activities on the computers using our own Google Drives. Be sure to check back later for access to Drives.
Well hopefully every student (and parent) had a restful long weekend. The transition from Kindergarten to Grade 1 is very hard on the little bodies but we made it through the first 5 day week. The upcoming week will seem VERY short as there is NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY.
In Language this week we will be focusing on letter sounds /i/ (short i as in iguana), /p/ and /n/. Along with the story for each sound we learn an action and a song. Please check out the YouTube links for each song posted on the "Alphabet Songs" tab. Each class also 'plays with the sounds' in each of their rooms. This included segmenting and blending sounds to create small words. This week we will also start to introduce 'tricky words' also known as sight words or high frequency words. These are words that readers and writers will come across frequently and the goal is to recognize them by sight rather than decoding. This week's words are I, a and the. In Math we will be spending 2 days working on representing the number 1 in numerous ways. We will also continue sorting. Grade 1 is in full swing! Yesterday we started our whole grade instruction in LA and Math. This means that for about 10 minutes during LA and Math all of the Grade 1 classes combine for a lesson, song or story relevant to what's being taught each day. Afterwards the classes break apart to "play" with the new knowledge. It's amazing to see how 70 can get together and engage in a story. During that time teachers will also be working with small groups of kids to give interventions or extensions of Grade 1 material.
In LA we have been focusing on the Jolly Phonics letter sound program. We introduce the letters in a non-sequential order. This allows us to be able to play with sounds to create words immediately. Yesterday we started with the /s/ sounds and today we completed the /a/ sound. On Thursday we will be learning the /t/. The goal is to have each child be able to recognize those letters, produce the sound and identify objects that start with those sounds. In Math we have been working on both Sorting and Number Sense simultaneously. We started sorting by a single attribute. Today we talked and worked with the number 0. Today was also the start of our class exchanges. Each grade was able to meet their Science (Miss Larsen), Social (Mrs. Rarick) and PE/DPA (Miss Longjohn) teachers. Don't forget that tomorrow (Thursday) is our Back to School BBQ. Hope to see you all there! |
