A huge congrats goes out to Mrs. Ranta's (formerly Miss Larsen's) class for winning a free swim at the Terry Fox Run. Her class raised a whooping $770 dollars which was the most amount raised in Kindergarten- Grade 2. Her class should watch out for details on when that swim will happen. Way to go!

Our Grade 1's have been working VERY hard on many different things over the last few weeks. We have tried to keep as much normalcy as possible throughout our Trickster week.
In Math we have been studying the numbers 1 and 2 extensively. The kids are learning how to represent these numbers in different ways such as the digit, word, on fingers, ten frames and tally marks. We have also been sorting manipulatives based on size, shape and colour. In Language we have been learning a new letter and sound almost every day. The last few letters have been c, k, ck together, e and h. The kids learn the letter name, sound, action and a song for each letter. We go back into our classrooms and work with these letters to spell out words. We have simultaneously been working on Daily 5 with Read to Self. Today we got to meet our Grade 4 Reading Buddies for the first time. In Health Mrs Rice has been doing lots of lessons on being kind to one another. We have read lots of books on bucket filling. The idea behind it is that we all have these imaginary buckets and every time you are rude/mean/unkind you are dipping water out of their bucket whereas when you are kind you are filling their bucket. All teachers have been modelling this language in their own individual classrooms as well. Don't forget that our Terry Fox Run is tomorrow (Thursday). Please have your child dress for the weather and bring a water bottle marked with their name. You're also more than welcome to come out and join your child during the event. Pledge forms will also need to be back tomorrow.
We are VERY lucky to have a theatre group called Trickster in our school next week. This year's artist-in-residency will run from Monday to Friday. Each class will be partaking in 80 minute sessions each day to prepare their show for the big presentation on Friday. Each show will focus on one of the 7 Habits. Please ask your child what their habit is!
The show will take place on Friday, Sept 23 in the gym from 1pm to about 2:30. Please come check it out! Now that the kids are all settled in, we started learning some curriculum today. In Math we talked about sorting and introduced the big fancy word of attribute. The kids practiced sorting by colour during Daily 3: Math by Myself. In LA we learned our first letter sound: s. We learned a song to go with it. You can access every letter song on our website- just click on the alphabet songs tab and select the song. In our own classroom we practiced our writing and brainstormed some words that start with s.
Don't forget that tomorrow kids (and adults) are invited to dress up like a superhero. The Back to School BBQ will be from 4-6. Hope to see you there! Every year it never ceases to amaze us how quickly grade ones fall into routine. We are all extremely impressed with the kids especially today with our new class rotations. Every afternoon the grade ones will rotate between Gym/ Health (Mrs Rice), Science (Miss Larsen) and Social (Mrs Rarick).
Thank you to parents who have already signed up for Remind messages. We try not to overwhelm you with text messages but also know that it is an easy way to communicate nowadays. If you aren't sure what to do please contact you classroom teacher. DON'T FORGET- Thursday is the Back to School BBQ from 4-6 so come check out the classrooms and grab a hot dog to eat! Kids are invited to dress up as our back to school theme which is SUPERHEROES! Well the very first day of grade one is complete! It is always a VERY busy day as we learn our new community and start to build some routines. We hope that you found all the important information in your child's agenda. There should have been a class newsletter, a school information package and a grade one information booklet. Please contact your homeroom teacher if you did not receive those items.
Remember to check this blog often. We will keep it updated so you know what is happening on grade one. |
