Yesterday in Social we finished up our All About Me books. My favourite page was when they had to decide what they wanted to be when they grew up. We had kids wanting to be police officers, gymnastic instructors, a welder and a "normal person". When asked what a "normal person" does I was informed of this: "well you know, stay home, drink coffee, clean the house and go shopping". Too cute!
Don't forget that tomorrow is Western Day so come to school in all of your cowboy/cowgirl gear! As per usual, Grade 1 is an exciting whirlwind! It is hard to believe that Halloween is just around the corner! Our grade team has been working very collaboratively this year. We have been very creatively using our traditional classrooms in a way that will mirror the layout of our new school in order to prepare the students for the huge change in learning. If you walk into our grade one area you will notice that quite often we have more than one class together and kids working at tables, desks and even sprawled on the floor! Our students have been adapting VERY well to the changes and travelling between classes is now the norm. Today we started a new endeavour: we had all 4 classes in the library for their whole group language lesson. ALL of the students were excellent listeners! During our Word Work time the classes intermixed and worked all throughout the library. This time was also used to start interventions for children needing remedial work. When I started teaching, I never imagined myself saying that having 75 grade one children in one learning space, listening, singing, brainstorming, cutting, gluing and writing was successful. Your children deserve an extra high five for their success, adaptability and work ethic. The school is becoming increasingly excited for our move! On another note, our class has started playing teacher at the end of the day. some days it's only a couple however the other day I counted 10 kids! It's pretty adorable! Congrats to our Grade One class who made the national news this week! Our participation in Post It Day (an anti-bullying campaign) caught the attention of the Huffington Post. Click on the Newspaper Link to see. At the end of the article you will see the Twitter feed and a picture of the post its we made is on it!
Newspaper Link I have uploaded the rest of the Jolly Phonics Songs under the Alphabet Songs tab.
It was already mentioned in agendas today but there has been at least one are of lice in grade one. I have yet to be informed about anyone in our class but if you do notice lice in your child's hair it would be appreciated if you let me know. Since we do work very closely with the other grade one classes PLEASE CHECK YOUR CHILD'S HAIR. An information pamphlet about lice and treatment went home today. If you are interested in a homeopathic remedy please contact me. Sorry that it's been so long since the last post! We've been very busy in Grade 1. Our class has been working with Miss Wald's class every morning to complete letter sound and tricky word activities. In Math we have been working on representing numbers as well as creating patterns. We meet Mrs Secretan's class every Thursday for science. Parent Teacher Interview time slots went home in agendas today. If that time does not work for you please let me know. If you did not get a label then I did not receive your request or it got misplaced somewhere. Please let me know and I will slot you in. Looking forward to meeting with you all tomorrow night. Here are some pictures of us starting our Mondrian art: The October Newsletter for our classroom is now on our blog. Click on the "Newsletters" tab above to access.
