It's getting very cold outside in the mornings! Today it was -10 degrees, Your child plays outside for 10-20 minutes in the morning and at recess, so it's that time of year to dress them up with warm winter coats, mittens and hats. Remember to label all of their clothing so it is easy to find, if things end up in the lost and found! Thank you for helping us keep your children healthy and safe at school.
We started off by balancing a bean bag on a body part while playing tag. The students sure had a fun time trying to balance their bean bag while running.
We then set up 6 different target stations throughout the gym. Students focused on tossing with the opposite hand/opposite foot. The 6 stations provided different challeges: higher target, lower target, smaller target and a target from further away. We had taken the week before last off of Science in order to talk about being unique and accepting of differences in others. We then specifically talked about Autism and what that meant. Each class read 2 different stories "ASD and Me" and "A Friend Like Simon". This is one of my favourite pages from "ASD and Me": I explained that Autism (ASD) causes people to think differently. The stories explained how some kids with Autism might act. After we brainstormed different ways that we can be a good friend to someone who has Autism. The kids had some wonderful ideas such as getting a special chair ready, checking to see if they are safe, asking to play with them and opening up a snack for them. The kids were then able to ask me any questions they might have about Autism. It has been wonderful to see how many kids have now engaged with children in Grade 1 who have Autism and there's now an understanding over these "different" behaviours and expectations.
Last week we went back to our Colour unit. We discussed shades of colours and sorted colour samples from lightest to darkest. We also talked about what it means for a colour to be bright and finding it in our environment. Today we started to make predictions about mixing primary colours. It was pretty neat to see the ooooh's and ahhhh's when we tested it out! I have also added some pictures to Miss Larsen's tab. -Miss Larsen In PE today we started off with the warm up activity “GOLD”. Kids had a fun time using different locomotor movements throughout the gym. When “GOLD” was shouted they had to sprint to a bean bag. From our warm up we went to partner toss with bean bags. We focused a lot on making sure you toss with the opposite hand and opposite foot (Ex: if your right handed you step with your left foot). Students also worked on showing their partners a target with their hands and eyes before their partner was able to toss it to them. We finished PE off with a quick cool down to stretch our arms and legs.

I have posted a couple of pictures from Art today under our Picture tab.
Friday is always a busy day at PES. Our Grade 1's caught up on some work first thing this morning. We also had Reading Buddies. During PALS today we discussed Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind from the 7 Habits of Happy Kids. Habit 2 revolves around setting a goal and making a plan to do it. In Art today we listened to a story about a scarecrow and talked about the job of a scarecrow. Afterwards we learned how to draw a portrait of a scarecrow (Objective: knowing art images can run off a page). We used oil pastels to outline our scarecrow and to add details. Then we used paint to create a resist effect. They turned out pretty cute! The very last portion of the day was spent doing Language and Math centres. The day always flies by! Have a fabulous weekend!
This week, Mrs. Parker's group started working on Connect Four Sounds. We started by looking at picture cards and thinking about the beginning or ending sound. Then we colored in the correct letters that match the picture. The Grade 1's haven't learned all of the Jolly Phonics sounds yet, so we are just working on the sounds we know (Mrs. Parker has made a modified game sheet). Next week, we will begin trying to connect four sounds in a row, like the game Connect Four. Eventually, the Grade 1's will be able to play this game in pairs! We continue to work on forming letters, practicing letter sounds and playing fun games!
