Subway hot lunch forms are online at the Ponoka Elementary School website!
The boys in the class are responsible for bringing in snacks on Halloween for the class to eat. Please send in enough for a portion of the class. There was an information note sent home today. Keep in mind that our school is promoting HEALTHY choices so items like oranges, fruit or cheese trays or pepperoni. Please remember that we have allergies in our grade level so no peanuts, eggs or kiwi!! Thanks! :) One last thing... I have added a new learning website on the blog. It is a colour mixing website where your child can use what they've learned about colour mixing to paint a
If you would like to volunteer for our Halloween activities in the AFTERNOON on Thurs. Oct. 31 please let me know. YOU MUST HAVE YOUR CRIMINAL RECORD CHECK SUBMITTED TO THE OFFICE!
Our class has been working with four tricky words (sight words) this week. Those words are "I", "a", "is" and "the". Each child's goal is to be able to recognize these words without having to sound them out. We will be working with 4 words per week. These words are very important to know as the children will find them often in their reading.
Next week's words are: "to", "and", "he" and "you". It might be a good opportunity for Oh I forgot to add that it is medieval day on Wednesday! Your child may dress up as a knight, princess, king, peasant or any other creat
We have had a very lively week in Grade 1... especially today!
In Language we spent the week examining rhyming words. We read a story called "I Spy" that was created using rhymes. We played rhyming games in centers like "Pop for Phonics" as well as an Ipad rhyming game. We also talked about vowels and how they are special because they can say their sound and their name. I introduced a new calendar song called "Vowel Bat". We learned about the /e/ and /h/ sounds too! In Math we spent the week working on ten frames and subititzing (recognizing a set of objects at a glance rather than counting). The kids know that I will show them the set of objects 3 times. The first time they are VISUALIZING, the second time they are QUANTIFYING (figuring out how many) and the third time they are double checking their quantities. We did this with sets of dots as well as ten frames. This is a key skill as it builds a foundation for composing and decomposing numbers as well as algebraic thinking. In Science the kids LOVED being scientists this week. We talked about how a scientist works neatly and carefully. They know that scientists also make predictions and that it is okay if our predictions are wrong. We took the primary colours and mixed them to create orange, green and purple using food colouring as well as paint. This afternoon was VERY LIVELY! During centers the fire alarms at PES went off. The grade ones knew exactly what to do and calmly went out to our meeting spot. After the emergency crews cleared the building and allowed us to return we were informed that a motor in a furnace had quit which caused the smoke and the alarms to go off. There was no actual fire. We were evacuated for nearly 55 minutes. Luckily we had beautiful weather to play Simon Says and Duck, Duck, Goo Thank you to everyone for their participation in parent teacher interviews! I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break!
Last week was a very busy week! In Language we really focused on breaking down words into sounds. The class seems to be much more confident in attempting to independently do this. This week we have been working with identifying rhyming words as well as vowels. In Math we have been working with numbers 3, 4, and 5. Today we also started subitizing which means recognizing how many dots are in a set without even couting. In Science we have been working with the season fall. Your child should be able to tell you things people, animals and plants do in the fall. This week we are focusing on colour mixing. Don't forget that Parent Teacher Interviews are this Thursday night! I sent home the appointment times with the kids today. If you need another copy please let me know! The interviews are rather informal. They will cover how I feel your child is adjusting to grade one as well as how you think they are doing. The night will also give me a chance to answer any questions or hear about any concerns that you may have. It will be a great opportunity to meet you! It is not necessary for your child to attend these interviews but they are more than welcome to come. Another week is here and gone! Today our school practiced our lockdown procedures in the morning. The kids were very successful with it. We also learned about the /k/ sound. Each child should be able say which 2 letters make the /k/ sound (c and k). We will continue to work with /k/ next week. In Social today we started talking about what it means to be unique. We have been working on exploring feelings and identified that it is okay to want to be alone sometimes. We drew things we enjoyed doing with others and things we enjoyed doing alone. We went to the computer lab this afternoon. Each child logs on to the computer independently using a unique username and password. Each child's password also has a symbol so they had to learn to use the shift button on the keyboard. Each child is able to access 3 learning websites from their favorites menu (starfall.com, cookie.com and abcya.com). Today we completed a letter sound assessment using SMART Notebook. The kids had to type their name, identify specific sounds, save and print their work. Here a couple pictures from computers today: Make sure to check the Pictures page of the website as I added some art pictures too!
